Northwest Normal University is one of the key universities jointly built by Gansu Provincial People's Government and the Ministry of Education, and is one of 14 universities in the western region supported by the State.

The university has 26 secondary colleges (65 departments, three teaching departments), one independent college and three Confucius institutes. Since its establishment, it has cultivated more than 240,000 students of all kinds. The university enrolls students from 31 provinces (municipalities and autonomous regions). Among them are 17,713 undergraduates, 422 doctoral students, 7,972 postgraduate students, 415 overseas students and 8,979 continuing education students.

Currently, there are 2,191 faculty and staff members at the university, among whom 332 have senior professional titles, and 725 have deputy senior professional titles. There are 1,344 full-time teachers, 308 professors (researchers) and 559 associate professors (associate researchers), as well as 137 doctoral supervisors and 1,122 master's supervisors.

The university attaches great importance to international cooperation and exchanges, and has established long-term and stable partnerships with many overseas colleges and universities.
