Gansu excels in water resources management, utilization
The Gansu Department of Water Resources has been promoting water resources management, water security guarantees, water ecological restoration and the introduction of smart water conservation during the 14th Five-Year Plan (2021-25).
This makes the flood control system of Gansu province more stable and the water network layout constantly optimized. It also significantly improves the water-saving effect, revitalize the river and lake ecologies and places digital empowerment at the forefront.
Aimed at accelerating the construction of flood control projects, Gansu has managed 13 major tributaries of rivers with a drainage area of over 3,000 square kilometers and 150 small and medium-sized rivers with a drainage area of 200-3,000 sq km since the 14th Five-Year Plan.
It has also built 54 reservoirs to protect the safety of 63,200 people and established 453.33 hectares of farmland downstream.

Through the implementation of water source projects, water transmission and distribution projects, smart water conservation projects and more, Gansu's water resource allocation pattern in the province continues to be optimized.
In 2024, the total water use in the province reached 11.73 billion cubic meters. Its water use per 10,000 yuan of GDP and water use per 10,000 yuan of industrial added value dropped by 19.4 percent and 21.5 percent, respectively compared with 2020.
